Traditional Personal Training Courses Don’t Prepare Us to Work With Autoimmune Bodies.

Roughly 50 million Americans live with an autoimmune condition, myself included, and the average person has to wait 4.6 years for a diagnosis.

Traditional certifications teach us to work with healthy bodies and other widely recognized special populations.

But autoimmune populations are almost entirely absent from most fitness education, making them one of the most underserved.

These clients arrive at every session carrying a physiological load we can’t see from the outside.

Their capacity can change from one workout to the next or one session to the next.

And as personal trainers, we don’t have to diagnose or treat autoimmune diseases to serve these clients better, but we can program around what their bodies can actually tolerate if we know what to look for.

I know because I am both a person who lives with multiple autoimmune diseases and a personal trainer.

All personal trainers need to know how to train clients with autoimmune and chronic conditions safely and effectively

Hi! I’m Andrea Wool, Founder of Autoimmune Strong, a certified personal trainer and nutritional therapy practitioner.

After my second son was born, I was constantly exhausted and in fiery pain everywhere.

Even simple activities like getting on the floor to play with my children, carrying my baby upstairs, and grocery shopping felt impossible.

I knew I needed to get stronger and feel more confident in my body again, so I hired a personal trainer who pushed me to work hard, move fast, and lift heavy.

But one good session would turn into weeks of pure exhaustion, excruciating pain, and erased progress.

Eventually, I stopped showing up.

Not because she was a bad trainer, but because I needed to build a slower program based on what my body could recover from.

And, I’ll admit, it wasn’t perfect. But it worked well enough for me to realize that I was missing a major piece of the puzzle.

After being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and multiple autoimmune diseases, I went back to school so that I could fully understand how my body was affected.

Today, I lift heavy, live an active lifestyle and my kids have no memory of a mom who was always in pain.

I feel strong and capable in my body.

Over the last 10+ years, I’ve helped over 1400 other women build strength and safely progress without triggering weeks of recovery.

Now, my NASM-approved course teaches other personal trainers how to do the same.
